Flylady Babysteps Day 1

Day 1 – Shine Your Sink

After you do this, you will keep it shiny by drying it out after each time you use it and making sure when you go to bed that it is shining so it will make you smile in the morning. This is how I get to hug you each day! That shiny sink is a reflection of the love that you have for yourself.
Our FlyLady system is all about establishing little habits that string together into simple routines to help your day run on automatic pilot. You can do this!
Not sure how to shine your sink? Read FlyLady’s FLYing Lesson on how to shine your sink.

Flylady - Babysteps

Dear Precious New Member,
I know that you have become overwhelmed by your home and the chaos that you have been living in. We are here to help you, and it doesn’t cost you a dime. Keep in mind that your home did not get this way overnight, and it is not going to get clean in a day. We are going to teach you how to take BabySteps and establish little routines for getting rid of your clutter and maintaining your home. This system will work for anyone; it doesn’t matter if you work outside of your home, stay home with children, are retired, or work at home. You can do this; you have just need someone to pat you on the back and give you a great big hug to get you started.
The voices that you hear in your head keep telling you that you are behind and you have to get it all done now. We are going to quiet those negative voices that are beating you up constantly and replace them with a loving, gentle voice that tells you that you are not behind and you can do this one BabyStep at a time!
Please do not get impatient with the process. Everything we do is going to help you replace those voices that put you down. We are here to lift you up and celebrate every little accomplishment.
Your very first BabyStep is to go shine your sink. Don’t listen to those voices that tell you that it not going to help your messy house. This is exactly where I started, and this little habit has changed my life! Take this BabyStep in faith and go do it. Here are the directions for shining your kitchen sink.

The right to be listened...

Listen to your mother!
I guess everybody knows that rule.

But what about listen to (and apply) what a mother decides for her child?
Have you heard about that rule too?

My friend who is working in child-care once told me, that one of the mothers she works for requested her to not train her child how to walk and rather carry it until it starts to walk on its own.

Can you imagine what would happen if my friend wouldn't respect that wish of hers and train the kid to walk, even the mother requested strongly not to do so?

When a religious leader gives out a Fatwa, he has the right to be listened and his fatwa needs to be applied. He takes the full responsibility and therefor must be followed, even if he's wrong.
A mother is her child's leader. She has the full responsibility on his upbringing and his education and therefor should have the right that her decisions, regarding her child, are respected.

How will a child learn, that his mothers decisions need to be respected, if people around don't care about those decisions?

Ya Allah,
let me fullfill my responsibility as a mother and guide and educate my child,
make the people who suround me respect me as a mother and apply my decisions regarding my child.
And let me go the right way and make the right decisions always.
Ameen.

Does this sound like a loving parent? Well I don't think so!

The standard American baby handbook, What to Expect the First Year (Eisenberg) advises:
"If you can tolerate an hour or more of vigorous crying and screaming, don't go to the baby, soothe him, feed him, or talk to him when he wakes up in the middle of the night. Just let him cry until he's exhausted himself-and the possibility, in his mind, that he's going to get anywhere, or anyone, by crying-and has fallen back to sleep. The next night do the same; the crying will almost certainly last a shorter time…You may find that earplugs, the whir of the fan, or the hum of voices or music on the radio or TV can take the edge off the crying without blocking it out entirely. If you have an intercom from the baby's room, the magnified crying may be particularly grating. You can reduce that problem by turning it off when the crying starts. If baby is truly hysterical, you may hear him anyway. If you can't hear him at all, set a minute timer for twenty minutes. When the buzzer rings, turn the intercom back on to see if he's still at it. Repeat this every twenty minutes until the crying stops."
http://www.themodernreligion.com/family/bed.html

Now you have the baby - no need for anybody else?

Same lady today told me some things that made me thinking...
...again... it seems she really makes me thinking a lot...

Here is what she said:
- Once the baby is there you love him so much that you don't need anybody else, isn't it?
- Once your baby is born you love him so much that you love your husband less and become more distant to him, isn't it?

No, It isn't!

My family and their advise and support are just as important to me than before and without them Mesut and me would be totally lost.
The relation between me and my husband has become so much stronger because of what we have lived together. He held my hands and made dua for me while I was screaming like crazy trying to push that baby out.
We lived moments together which were so intense we never imagined possible.
We did that together, so we can do anything together!

Thank you for everything ya Usamati.
Alhamdoulilah!!!

We are there for you, there for eachother..

While on my research about the last post I found these wonderful words that I totally had to share:

A Muslim mother is available to her child. A Muslim father is available to his child. We know that with parent-child attachment comes the emotional security that is necessary for developing a healthy inner self-confidence. The message we want to get across to our child is, "If you have a problem, come to me. If you are afraid, tell me about it. If you are lonely, I am here." We are not interested in cultivating independence before the child is ready for it.

http://www.themodernreligion.com/family/bed.html

That is exactly what I want to give our child on his way:
we are your parents and we love you, what ever might happen,
we are there for you whenever you need us,
we are there for you to protect you and guide you and love you.

I don't believe it to be beneficial to push a child away as soon as possible, I don't think that helps a child to become strong and independent.
I believe by being there for a child when he needs us (babies need us all the time) makes them feel loved and secure, secure enough to go out on their own to discover the new world around them, knowing that if something happens they are not alone and if they fall we will be there to catch them.

co-sleeping - the islamic perspective

Well, I started to think and finally research about that after our neighbour came over today. Our neighbour is an old lady who is actually just few years older than my mommy and she comes to visit my mother in law a lot, daily almost. Since Mesut is with us she comes to see him too and never misses to give some comment:
- ah, when ever I see him sleeping you are holding him, he should sleep alone.
- what he sleeps with you in the same bed? you will kill him because you will roll on top of him while sleeping!
- ...
I don't intend to comment on these statements now and when she is talking I just nod and smile...
Usually I will forget what she said after about 5 minutes, but today she kept me busy for quite some time and even made me google!
She said:
- You should not sleep with your baby in the same bed, it is HARAM (forbidden in Islam)!
This sentence turned all my lights on!
once because I could not imagine that this was true and twice because to say something is actually haram is a big thing and comes with the risk of loading a sin on the one who states something haram that is halal (allowed in islam).
I asked her who said that and she said it was written in the holy Quran..
Well, anyway her statement stayed in my head and made me research:
Alltough in Quran or Sunnah there is no statement about co-sleeping as such, children should sleep seperately once they reach "the age of reason" which is according to the Hadith narrated in Abu Dawud about 10 years.
"Order your children to observe Salat when they reach the age of seven and spank them for not observing it when they reach the age of ten, and arrange their beds (for sleeping) separately." (Abu Dawud)
some define the age of reason as the age once the child knows what is his right and what is his left hand.
So there is totally no restriction about having your baby sleep in the same bed as his parents, in fact it is only beneficial for the baby (decreased risk of sudden infant death, less waking in the night and therefor better sleep without crying), for the mother (more sleep) and for the relation between them. Even for the father-baby relation it is very beneficial that both feel the proximity during the night and be greeted by a smile first thing in the morning.

don't think, just listen to the others... really?

Everybody knows whats good for your baby,
and for you...
just you don't know it...
why?
because your a first time mom!
So just stop, or better:
don't even start thinking and just do what they'll tell you to do. And they'll tell you A LOT, unfortunately they tell you all different things that make you so confused that you have no other choice but to start thinking yourself..
and thats only were the whole thing starts!

And because I was loaded with advise, I would feel shy if I couldn't give some advise back:
Don't listen!
At least don't listen to 95% of what they tell you!
Why? Because they don't know anything?
No! Because they advise about THEIR baby, not about YOUR baby. And every baby is different and only YOU know YOUR baby.

My second piece of advise:
Listen to your heart, your mind and your instinct. Believe in yourself and in the mother in you.

There was a time I was going crazy thinking about what I shall do with the baby, was I doing it right, and more importantly, were the OTHERS thinking that I was doing it right?

Then there was some point when I said to myself:
you will get 1000 advises about the same subject telling you 1000 different things to do. Listen to them all, smile and nod. Then go, ask Allah to guide you and just follow your heart and your mind.

It took me three months to come to this conclusion and even now it is very hard to apply, very hard to not feel evaluated by others.
"Oh, she does it differently than I did, that cannot be right!"

What helped me:
knowing that my husband thinks I am a good mom and believes in me,
having my mom sharing the same opinion,
and once I figuered out what parenting style was close to mine, find mothers with similar ideas to support you.
(I found mine at kellymom.com)

as time is passing, live is changing...

Well, I've had a baby... three months ago actually..
But I didn't only have had a baby, I've had a whole new beginning, a whole new start into a new live..

There is so much to tell, so much to say that I don't even know were to start... thats maybe why I had been silent for so long...
Mesut was born on the 15th of July, on a sunday ten minutes before midnight while it was raining outside, like it had been raining all week.
It was hard, crazy hard even but my husband was there with me so together we were strong enough.
People say the moment you see your baby, all the pain is forgotten, well for me that didn't happen! But the love and the joy that comes after the pain (or after the first 6 weeks) is unbelievable, unexplainable.
Maybe later Ill talk more about how I felt back then and how I feel now...

Pregnancy - coming to an end

Our baby boy is on his way inshallah, only 3 days until his due day..

To keep the past 9 months better in memory I decided to kinda summarize my pregnancy:
All in all I would say that my pregnancy has beed surprisingly easy and pretty much free of any uncomfortable sympthoms.
The first three months have been probably the most uncomfortable, I was very sensitive to smells, could eat only certain food (like spaghetti with tomatoes or apple with yogurt) and felt quite tired and exhausted.
The second trimester has been lovely, I stayed at home and had enough time to exercise, take a rest and just enjoy feeling babys movements becoming stronger and stronger.
In the beginning of the third trimester my doctor diagnosed me with gestational diabetes and put me on a very strict diet. I had gained 12 kg only within the 5th and 6th month of pregnancy, so thanks to my new diet my weight gain slowed down again.
Since my 31th week of pregnancy I am in germany which has not been very beneficial for my diet, but about 4 weeks ago my doctor rechecked on my gestational diabetes and said all my results were totally fine, so it seems the gestational diabestes is gone, al hamdoulilah! I am still watching what I eat but by far not as strict as when I was on my diet.
Although in the third trimester I started to feel more uncomfortable (back and hip pain, reflux etc.) I really enjoyed my pregnancy a lot and don't feel I had to suffer or work to hard for our baby boy. Alhamdoulilah!
Here in germany I took quite some classes on birth preparation, first aid, taking care of a new born and alternative/natural medication for children. Twice a week I had an appointment with my midwifes to check on me and the baby.
At 37 weeks of pregnancy the baby still had not turned so I went to an specialized hospital and some after checkups, the doctor recommended an external version of the baby, which was successful and totally painless, alhamdoulilah again!
During this whole pregnancy I have gained 23 Kg, which I feel totally comfortable with and hope to loose again soon after our baby boy has arrived.

Now at the very end of this pregnancy I am just totally ready to have this baby! I am having a lot of contractions and babys head is already deep in my pelvis, just waiting for his daddy to come out :)

I have been very blessed with having an amazing husband and father for my child who supported me all through my pregnancy and raised my spirit when I felt fat and stressed, who enabled me to relax and stay home focusing on me and the baby,
and with having had a very easy and wonderful pregnancy.
Alhamdoulilah!

My love for Hijab

Sometimes you need a small reminder to tell you how lucky you are for having what you have. By watching that video I just remembered (eventhough I never forgot) how much I really love my Hijab!

First of all I wear Hijab to obey and please Allah in the very very first place and there are a couple more reasons why I love my Hijab so much. And by talking about Hijab I mean headscarf and abaya.

Hijab makes me feel protected and valued.
Hijab makes me feel beautiful, when I wear it outside and when I don't wear it infront of my husband and close family members.
The fact that I cover outside makes me feel even more special and pretty when i dress up for my husband.
Wearing Hijab simply makes me feel good, remembering Allah and knowing I am doing right.
Even though I tried to replace my abaya by wearing a coat (turkish style) I came back to my abaya because it's the only thing that truly makes me feel comfortable.
Sometimes when I am sick i wear Hijab at home because it makes me feel comfortable and protected.

Alhamdoulilah that Allah gave us this great way to please him by feeling so wonderful at the same time. I don't want to miss my Hijab ever!
Alhamdoulilah!

where to give birth - FERA

I am currently on a tour to find the best place to give birth to my son. First I thought it might be too early for that, considering the fact that my due date is only after four months but the presence of pregnant ladies in their first trimester prooved me wrong, as well as the fact that two of now three places that i have visited so far were already full for the month of july!

well, here is a short summary of the first place that i visited:

The FERA birthing center:
what makes FERA special is the fact that it is a combination of a typical birthing center combined with three doctors that are always available and present in the end of every birth.
The bringing ladies were very sympathic, warm and friendly.
The center has two birthing rooms, one very small and equiped only with one bed and nothing else:

the second room has a bed with some equipment to hang on :) and a bath tub to give birth in:

although i was disapointed by the smal room i really liked the big birthing room.

The only negative fact that makes me definitely not consider this birthing center for my self is the fact that out of three doctors, two are male and that they will be present in any case, be it an emergency or not.

skincare during pregnancy

Except for the first two months of my pregnancy or so my skin has been doing really great but to keep it like that i have been using some very basic and gentle products to keep my skin as calm as possible.

one of my skincare staples is the clarisonic mia which i (try to) use once a day.
It keeps my skin looking clean and fresh while being very gentle.

As for actual skincare i have been using only two products on a daily bases:
The Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser

and the Avene Skin Recovery Cream
For weekly treatments i am loving the Avene Gentle Purifying Scrub
together with the Avene Instant Soothing Moisture Mask
the Weleda Iris Moisture Mask
and the Dermalogica Skin Refining Mask
Those products have helped a lot in keeping my skin in very good condition during my pregnancy so far.

Since everything you put in and on your body can effect your baby, there are some products i had to stop using :

The Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant for example contains beta hydroxy acid which is better be avoided during pregnancy
Also Retinol and Retina are better avoided during pregnancy. Thats why i haved stopped using my beloved Avene Ystheal+ Moisturizer and Avene Ystheal+ Eyecream.

The sad news are that i cannot take these products while breastfeeding either. So i guess ill be some years without these products...
But as long as the baby is safe and happy everything is just fine..

Abaya - during pregnancy?

Since most of abayas are cut to cover a ladies body and curves, most abaya models can be worn during pregnancy as well.
But there are some styles which are specially suited for maternity as they are very wide cut or ajustable.
Here are some of the styles which are extra suitable and which i have in my closet already:

The first and most "common" front closed style. These might be a bit revealing and curve-hugging in the last trimester, but that depends on the model.

A second, more flexible option is the shoulder-closed style. The sides are open and therefore adapt perfectly to the growing belly. In the last months it might be advisable to wear this style only with maxi dresses or skirts for optimal coverage. The same goes for the front-open abayas.
Both of these styles are also perfect for nursing mothers as they allow direct access.

Another very concealing style is the butterfly abaya. They come in a sleeved butterfly and in the full butterfly version.
Both versions have lots of fabric on the sides to provide room for a growing belly. If extre fabric is needed, the seems can be very easily adjusted.
Both models are also suited for breastfeeding since they provide a 9 inch front closure that allows easy access.

I love all my abayas and cannot wait to see them grow with my belly!

The ultimate diaper bag?

Well... there i go talking about how a hero i want to be doing my diaper bag and many other things by myself...
well.. maybe i just changed my mind?

Because these bags will be sooooo cute as diaper bags!!!

the baby boy option:

and the baby girl option:

Sure these bags (available at H&M) are not so sweety baby-ish but they are sooo cool!!!!
I really really love those!
Ill waite until we find out the gender of the baby and than i might think about buying one of these... let's see :)

Fit and Food - 25.January

Food:
Breakfast: Toast with butter and nutella, green tea.
Lunch: smashed potatoes with brown onions and fish filet (Fischstäbchen)
Dinner: one orange and water

Workout:
aerobic warm-up
new pilates video which i didn't like
pregnancy yoga
that makes 30 minutes workout and 25 minutes relaxation.

Maternity Fashion

For quite some time I thought that i don't need to buy extra maternity wear. And for the most part i still think like that. I plan to wear leggings which i can roll down so they don't sqeeze my belly, long t-shirts and to go out ill wear my abayas or one of my maxi dresses.

But at the same time there are so many wonderful maternity clothes available that i can't resist to show them at least.

Specially nice and inexpensive pieces are available at asos.com

Very nice and inexpensive basics can be found at H&M:

and nice blouses...

as well as pants and jeans:

I am so in love with all these things that ill totaly go to H&M next time i go to germany!!!!
love love love those clothes!

How to carry your baby around...

When it comes to bringing your baby from A to B, there are several methods to do so.
The two biggest alternatives might be to put the baby in a stroller

or to carry it around with yourself using a formm of baby carrier.
Babies are all different, so my brother for example only wanted to lay in a stroller were he had lots of space to move around whereas i wouldn't lay for one minute in a stroller but wanted to be as close to my mom as i could.
I personally prefer the baby carrier for several reasons:
- it is less expensive
- it is healthy for the physical development of the baby
- it keeps the baby calm as it feels always close to the parent and therefor safe.

Baby carriers come in different styles and variations. Most common are the carrier that has a more stable structure

and the blanket which can be folded very very small.

The carrying blankets are more healthy for the physical development of the baby and can be used from the first day up to about 3 years.
It allows for many different carrying positions and is the most cost effective carrying option.

Fit and Food - 21.January

Exercising during pregnancy is extremely benefitial for the mothers health, for the baby's health, to make labor easier and to enable a natural and fast birth.
Knowing that i surfed the internet and found some youtube videos with exercise routines specially for pregnant ladies.
I have 3 routines:
- aerobic: warm up, different strenght workouts, stretching
- pilates: four different workouts, last being a stretching one
- yoga: relaxing and breathing techniques to relax mother and baby and prepare for labor

My big pregnancy-plan is to take time to eat healthy and to exercise every day.
To see how successful i am in realising that plan ill write it down day by day, hopefully.

Saturday, 21. January:

Food:
Breakfast: Toast with butter, honey and jam. Green Tea.
Lunch: Spaghetti with a sauce of pesto and cream cheese.
Dinner: Vietnamese raw springrolls:

take rice paper

Make a sauce from fish sauce, water, garlic, spring onions, carrot and a hint of sugar.

Cut salad, spring onions, cucumber, carrots and grilled beef.

Fill the rice paper, roll it into a roll, dip it in the sauce and ENJOY!

I really loved it soo much!!!

Excercise:

It seems i am really unfit at the moment which made me actually quite sad.
I did my aerobic warm up which lasts only 6 minutes and that was really hard hehehehe! So hard that after that I went directly to aerobic stretching and that was it for the day.
But before going to bed i did the Yoga excercise which is really nice and relaxing, loved it!

So that was the day, lets see how the other days will go...

Movie: I don't know how she does it

I just watched Sara Jesicca Parkers new movie "I don't know how she does it"

It's about a working mom who tries to combine her family life with her career and by doing so she almost looses her family until she realises that she need to cut back on her career to save her family and marriage.

It's actually a quite basic story and probably a bit too dramatic.

Personally I would never want to live a life like that and I am more than happy to have a husband who totaly supports me in that!
I want to be a stay at home mom and i strongly believe that's my responsibility in this life.
My own mom didn't have the choice after my father became sick. So if we will be one day in financial need sure I will work to support my family. But inshallah that will never happen and all of us stay inshallah healthy and ok so that i can fulfill what I see as my responsibility. To be a woman, a wife and a mom.

And once again, my dear wonderful husband, thank you so so much for beeing with me and supporting me always!

fabric options for a baby girl

If the baby is going to be a girl, here are my fabric options for my DIY projects:

And again first the options for diaper bag, nursing cover, "plush pad" and car seat cover:

For the baby blanket i have again a cotton flanell and a satin. for the flanell i have one plain option and one with roses.

As with the fabrics for a boy i will order fabric examples to see which fabrics are best.
